The legend of Mn. Jacint Verdaguer explains that this farm had been founded by a seafarer who, after becoming disappointed with life at sea, fled inland looking for a place where they had never heard of it. The legend concludes that our man in question came to be such an excellent farmer as he had been a seafarer. Of course this was a good many years ago but it does explain where such a strange name for a mountain farm in the Pyrenees came from. The house called "El Mariner" (seafarer or sailor) lies 950 m above sea level straddled across the regions of Ripollès and Garrotxa and is within the municipality of Camprodon. It groups a number of buildings from the XVIIth century in the characteristic Catalan architecture that has been strictly and faithfully preserved. It is placed in excellent surroundings being just above the village of Sant Pau, oriented to the South providing sunshine and happiness. Large trees surround it and provide cool shade in the summer. The rich earth supports cows on its good pastures and their calves are kept with them up to seven months and then are fattened slowly on good produce without forcing growth. The result is a tender, delicious meat that the palate notices the care we have taken. The old tenant farmers' houses of this farmhouse have been restored in order to cater to rural tourism. They offer:
LA CASANOVA DEL MARINER (independent rural accommodation). A lovely house that is rented out complete, both for weekends and whole weeks. It is fully equipped to offer maximum comfort while still retaining its characteristic charm. It can house eight people distributed among four rooms.
Two of the rooms have a suite bathroom. There are a total of three bathrooms in the house.
The kitchen is fully equipped with washing machine, dishwasher, cooker, oven and
refrigerator. The living and dining rooms have been joined together and enjoy a large
fireplace. There is also central heating.
MAS DE L'OM (independent rural accommodation). Inside the same grounds, but 2 km. away, that is also rented complete and houses 10 people with the possibility of adding supplementary beds. The house was awarded the Medal for Tourism by the Catalan Government, Generalitat de Catalunya, in 2003. It has 5 double rooms, 2 bathrooms and 1 separate
toilet. The kitchen preserves the antique stove and the original sink. At the same time
that the original charming characteristics have been kept intact, it has been possible to
reach a high level of comfort by choosing the furniture according to modern needs. The
loft has been transformed into a living room with a games table. Located in the Valley of Camprodon, on the outskirts of Sant Pau de Segúries, there is an old windmill called "EL MOLÍ DE CAN NIN". Here we have three houses which have been recently renovated according to the original architecture. The first house is situated where straw and grass were kept in the old times, hence its name "LA PAHISSA" (the straw loft). It consists of:
The second house is called "EL MOLÍ" (the mill) and it consists of:
The third house is called "CAN SISCO" and it consists of:
All the houses have central heating and extra-beds are available. The wooden interior decoration and the old furniture make the rooms warm and comfortable. Being so close to the Vallter 2000 ski resort, they are the ideal place to spend winter weekends near the snow. Summer is also a great season to come and enjoy the wonderful landscape and the cool climate of the surrounding regions of El Ripollès and La Garrotxa.
